James Hanan's Temple of Arts & Science

Hanan Gallery is a beautiful, tasteful boutique gallery located in a Victorian building, upstairs on the first floor at 130 Dee St, Invercargill, New Zealand. Louise Craig is the artist and owner and here you will discover Louise’s artwork.

Louise was based in the building in the early 1990s when she used it for her art practice and the opportunity arose in 2009 to be located in the building again. With her appreciation of history and her museum/art gallery sector experience Louise decided it was now time to establish her own art gallery and allow all visitors the chance to see the local heritage.

Venture upstairs and you will see that Louise has used her previous exhibition installation experience to tastefully layout and set up Hanan Gallery. Louise studied Visual Communications and Fine Arts and she has now continued her art practice across mixed media. An interest in the psychology of colour also led Louise to become a Colour Therapy practitioner.

James Hanan

In 1878, James Hanan established his Temple of Arts & Science in what is now called the Hanan Gallery. This Temple was the first observatory in Invercargill and was used as a lecture theatre for various lectures and concerts. He also had scientific displays and artwork of the then known history of the world.

As a way to honour and pay homage to James Hanan, there is a display and handouts about Hanan’s Temple of Arts & Science in the gallery, with reproductions of paintings that were discovered in the building as recently as 1996.
